Background and objective: Due to the dramatic increase in the elderly population in the world and especially in Iran, the issue of providing health for these people has received much attention from researchers. Studies have shown that physical activity increases the health of older people. But the effect of interval exercise on quality of life and life expectancy in older people is still unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of high intensity interval training on quality of life and life expectancy in the elderly.
Methods: For this purpose, 40 healthy men over 65 years old were randomly divided into two groups: control (66.18 ± 6.9 years) and 2: exercise (68.07 ± 5.3 years). The training group performed aerobic interval training for 8 weeks (three sessions per week). Before and after the intervention, the quality of life was measured using the Elderly Quality of Life Questionnaire (Lipad) and life expectancy questionnaire using Snyder's life expectancy questionnaire.
Findings: Statistical analysis showed that high intensity interval training increased the quality of life and life expectancy, but the level of quality of life and life expectancy in the control group did not change. The results of analysis of covariance showed that the level of quality of life and life expectancy after exercise intervention in the training group was significantly higher than the control group.
Conclusion: The results showed that 8 weeks of high intensity interval training increased the quality of life and life expectancy in the elderly. Therefore, the researchers believe that the use of high intensity interval training will be fruitful for improving the health of older people.
